Sebastián Piñera, ex-president of Chile, died in a helicopter crash in Lake Ranco

A helicopter carrying former President Sebastián Piñera , along with three other people, crashed in the commune of Lago Ranco, Los Ríos Region (Chile), this Tuesday afternoon. Piñera’s press office confirmed his death.

The Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá , gave the official news on behalf of the Government.

Tohá reported that a national mourning will be declared and specified that the three companions of Piñera who were able to save themselves managed to swim to the shore of the lake.

The accident was reported at 2:57 pm (12:57 in Colombia). Her sister, her brother-in-law and her grandson were traveling with Piñera, according to Radio Bío Bío .

The three of them managed to get out of the helicopter, which was piloted by the former president of Chile himself, who could not get out. “(…) the fuselage, where he was, was about 40 meters deep,” says Bío Bío.

The survivors suffered fractures, says CNN Chile, and the former president was unable to untie the belt to be able to exit the aircraft. Piñera, adds CNN Chile, heard by radio that he had a problem, apparently caused by bad weather conditions: the sky was cloudy.

Piñera had a penchant for helicopters and, as a former president, his flights were monitored by the authorities. Sebastián Piñera was born on December 1, 1949 in Santiago, Chile.

He was 74 years old and was president of Chile between 2018 and 2022. The former president of Colombia Iván Duque already reacted to the news about Piñera : “I feel the greatest pain for the death of my great friend and colleague Sebastián Piñera.

A unique leader, an upright human being and a friend like few others who always supported Colombia “My solidarity with his entire family.”

“Dear Sebastián, you will always be in our memory and we will defend your legacy,” Duque said in X.
