College of the Canyons student 19-year-old Gavin Orozco-Unzueta killed in a car-to-car shooting in Granada Hills

Early Wednesday morning, officials from the College of the Canyons confirmed that a student had been fatally shot in a car-to-car incident in Granada Hills.

At approximately 12:55 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers were called to the 17500 block of Rinaldi Street in response to the shooting.

Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old Gavin Orozco-Unzueta with several gunshot wounds, as detailed in an LAPD press release.

Orozco-Unzueta was taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to authorities.

Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook conveyed her profound sorrow to the College of the Canyons community, expressing that Gavin Orozco-Unzueta, one of their current students, fell victim to violence and tragically lost his life in a shooting incident in Granada Hills on Wednesday morning. She stated that the incident has garnered widespread media attention and is actively being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department. The College of the Canyons community deeply mourns this devastating and senseless tragedy, recognizing the challenges faced by those who knew Gavin. Gavin, who graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 2023, commenced his studies at COC in the fall of the same year.

Dr. Van Hook extended heartfelt condolences to Gavin’s family, friends, classmates, and instructors, acknowledging their shared grief over his untimely passing.

She concluded by noting that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with no arrests made at present.
