The Norfolk Police Department has confirmed the involvement of its officers in a pursuit Thursday afternoon, chasing a wanted individual that culminated in a collision and gunfire exchange.

The incident was reported at 2:50 p.m.

Authorities remain at the scene located at Hampton Boulevard and Terminal Boulevard. Citizens are urged to steer clear of the vicinity. Presently, Terminal Blvd and the westbound exit 2 on I-564 are shut down.

“Police have verified that an individual in the suspect’s vehicle discharged a firearm toward officers, prompting Norfolk Police to return fire.

A man was subsequently transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Authorities have not disclosed whether any officers sustained injuries during the altercation. Visual evidence depicts a significant police presence and a silver car with a bullet hole in the rear window.

The vehicle came to a halt in a ditch near the train tracks along Terminal Boulevard. Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi also arrived at the active scene.”

“As the chief legal authority for Norfolk, responsible for evaluating the justification of any use of force, I have personally visited the scene to gain firsthand familiarity with it.

The Virginia State Police have assumed control of the investigation, and I will review their final report to make determinations and subsequently release my findings,” stated Fatehi.

Fatehi clarified that the standard for a police officer aligns with that of a private citizen.

Lethal force is only justified if a reasonable person, facing similar circumstances, believes they or someone nearby faces an imminent threat of deadly force,” Fatehi explained.

This is a developing story that will be updated when more information is available.
