Late Friday morning, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department evacuated a Fair Oaks apartment complex due to what they are calling an ongoing active shooting situation.

Officials report that the suspect is concealed within one of the units in the complex, which has been emptied of residents, and several adjacent roadways have been cordoned off to traffic.

The incident began around 10:05 a.m. at the Hazel Ranch Apartments on the 8800 block of Winding Way near Hazel Avenue.

A resident reported gunshots aimed at their residence, with a bullet found on the property. Sheriff’s deputies swiftly arrived and engaged with the suspect, although specific details about the encounter are currently unclear.

Shots were reportedly exchanged between deputies and the suspect. Following the escalation, the Hazel Ranch apartment complex was promptly evacuated shortly before 11 a.m.

Sergeant Amar Gandhi from the Sheriff’s Office has verified that the armed suspect, who allegedly fired multiple shots from an apartment, is still contained within a unit and remains a danger.

The gunfire exchange took place on the 8800 block of Winding Way, near Hazel Avenue, exacerbating concerns in the vicinity.

To safeguard public safety, deputies have evacuated all apartments within the complex where bullets penetrated residences.

Emergency personnel from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District are present to provide aid as the active situation unfolds. Motorists are urged to steer clear of the area, as several roads and a portion of the Hazel Ridge Plaza Shopping Center have been sealed off to aid law enforcement operations.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including specialized SWAT units and the agency’s Rook vehicle, are actively managing the scene.

A command post has been set up outside Mikuni’s sushi restaurant, located near the apartment complex. As of 12:00 p.m., the situation remains ongoing.
