Following several weeks of heightened seismic activity, a volcano in Iceland has erupted.

Prior to the eruption, an evacuation was initiated, relocating nearly 4,000 residents from the fishing town of Grindavik in the country’s southwest.

Additionally, the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa was closed as a precaution.

The eruption was officially confirmed by Iceland’s Meteorological Office on Monday.

This is the fourth time in less than 3 years after the thousands of earthquake swarms recorded since the past few months.
