Student killed in shooting at Darlington-Lee Adult Education

Update: Darlington police seek help locating a car suspected to be involved in the Darlington-Lee Adult Education shooting that killed one student.

A tragic incident occurred on a Darlington County school campus, resulting in the loss of a student’s life.

According to the Darlington County School District, the unfortunate event transpired on Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of the Darlington-Lee Adult Education campus on Magnolia Street.

The student’s identity has not yet been disclosed by the Darlington County Coroner’s Office. Darlington police responded to a report of gunfire around 12:30 p.m., where they discovered a man with gunshot wounds.

The student was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, as reported by the State Law Enforcement Division. This agency was called in by the Darlington Police Department to assist in the investigation.

At the moment of the incident, the school district initiated a secure status for all district buildings and schools in the vicinity, temporarily restricting access.

This status was subsequently lifted for regular dismissal at all schools.

“This is an incredibly tragic situation. The loss of a young person is heart-wrenching,” said Dr. Tim Newman, DCSD superintendent. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of our student. We are grateful for our law enforcement officers who responded to the situation. We are also grateful for our school staff who responded quickly to secure our buildings.”

The Darlington Police Department has confirmed that there is currently no immediate threat to the surrounding area.

The investigation into the shooting is actively underway.
