Video shows 18-year-old student shot at West Jefferson High School in Harvey

No suspects have been identified, and there has been no information immediately released regarding any arrests.



An 18-year-old male student was shot during dismissal at West Jefferson High School in Harvey on Thursday, the last day of school.

He was taken to the hospital, but his condition is unknown.

Police haven’t made any arrests yet and are investigating the shooting that happened around noon as students were leaving.

There’s a heavy police presence at the school.

Councilman Hans Liljeberg reported that a fight broke out after the last day of school dismissal.

According to a JPSO spokesperson, the shooting occurred in a business parking lot across the street from the school.

Jefferson Parish Schools released the following statement:

We are aware of a shooting earlier today outside of West Jefferson High School. While an active investigation is ongoing, we are working on site and cooperating fully with the Jefferson Parish Sherriff’s Office. During the time of the shooting, the school was placed on lockdown immediately and following all district safety protocols. After the school received clearance to start dismissal, students were released for dismissal. We urge anyone with information related to this incident to contact JPSO. The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority, and JP Schools will continue to cooperate with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation of this matter.
