40-year-old Maurice White killed in officer-involved-shooting in Athens

Limestone County Coroner Mike West has verified the identity of the individual shot and fatally wounded by law enforcement on Wednesday night.

Identified as 40-year-old Maurice White, the suspect was confronted by police following reports of White allegedly brandishing a firearm and making threats.

According to reports, White purportedly discharged a firearm before departing the location.

He subsequently fled from officers, taking refuge within the Songbird Drive neighborhood.

During the encounter in the neighborhood, law enforcement endeavored to persuade him to surrender the weapon.

According to reports, White discharged his firearm and subsequently fled once more, seeking cover between two residences.

Authorities stated that an officer deployed a Taser against the suspect, during which White allegedly aimed the gun at the officers.

The shooting occurred around 7:20 p.m., following which officers attempted life-saving measures, but White was declared deceased at the scene.

The State Bureau of Investigations will assume control of the inquiry, and there remains an ongoing police presence in the vicinity.
