The Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson affirmed to Reuters on Wednesday afternoon that there was indeed an assassination attempt targeting Prime Minister Robert Fica.

However, no details regarding Fico’s health condition were disclosed by the ministry, as per Reuters.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot in Handlova, located in the western region of the country, during a government meeting being held there.

The wounded individual was promptly transported to a hospital. TA3 television reported that the police have apprehended the suspected assailant.

Based on our sources, the individual responsible for the shooting is reported to be Juraj Cintula, aged 71, who was in lawful possession of the firearm.

Slovak media relayed that the assailant was previously employed by a private security firm and is recognized as Juraj Cintula, a poet. This information was provided by the local TV channel Markiza.

Back in 2016, Cintula himself faced a violent attack at a shopping center in Levice, perpetrated by an intoxicated individual, surviving an assassination attempt.

Cintula’s son refuted claims suggesting his father had a history as a psychiatric hospital patient and affirmed his possession of a firearm license.

Presently, Cintula is detained, and the National Criminal Agency of Slovakia is handling his case.

This is a developing story that will be updated when more information is available.
