33-year-old Humberto Paz arrested for the shooting death of 71-year-old Vahid Khaledi at Brownsville Public Library

Paz was arraigned this morning and issued a $3,250,000 bond for Murder (1st Degree Felony) and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (2nd Degree Felony).

At approximately 12:04pm, Brownsville Police Patrol Officers responded to the Brownsville Public Library located at the 2600 block of Central Blvd for an unknown disturbance.

Upon arrival, one male subject was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. Male subject has been confirmed deceased. No other individuals were injured.

One male subject has been arrested.

The victim of yesterday’s shooting has been identified as 71-year-old Vahid Khaledi.

The aggressor was identified as 33-year-old Humberto Paz. Paz was arrested yesterday by Brownsville Police Patrol Officers at the scene.

Paz was arraigned this morning and issued a $3,250,000 bond for Murder (1st Degree Felony) and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (2nd Degree Felony).

Preliminary information revealed that the incident arose due to a verbal altercation between the victim and the aggressor, both whom were visiting the library. Other claims related to this incident are unconfirmed at this time and remain under investigation.

Despite this unfortunate event, we want to assure our community that safety remains our top priority. We want to recognize the excellent work taken by the library staff and our patrol officers who were able to safely evacuate everyone from the scene in a calm and orderly manner.

The Brownsville Public Library Main Branch will be closed until further notice.
