The Kansas City Police Department is investigating what seems to be an “accidental shooting” resulting in the death of a young child on Tuesday night.

Authorities responded to a residence on East 51st Street near Eastern Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, following reports of gunshots around 10:30 p.m.

The incident was upgraded to a shooting while officers were en route.

Upon arrival, they were informed that the victim, a boy under the age of 5, was being taken to a nearby hospital by family members.

Unfortunately, the child was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Police detained an individual at the scene for further investigation.

Initial findings suggest that the shooting may have been accidental or self-inflicted.
