49-year-old Paul Howell killed in Murfreesboro road rage shooting

A fatal road rage incident occurred in Murfreesboro, resulting in one fatality and another individual injured.

According to police, the shooting took place on Saturday around 7:44 p.m. on South Rutherford Boulevard involving two motorcyclists and the driver of an SUV.

The deceased victim was identified as 49-year-old Paul Howell, who succumbed to his injuries at a hospital after the incident.

The other victim, a 48-year-old man, sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and received medical treatment.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 49-year-old Joseph Gann, initially fled the scene but later surrendered himself at the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department Station 3 on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, as reported by authorities.

Gann has been apprehended and is confronting multiple charges, including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and one count of reckless endangerment, as indicated by law enforcement.

According to officials, Gann discharged two shots at the motorcyclists. Detectives are actively investigating to ascertain the cause of the road rage incident.

The police have confirmed that the shooting remains under investigation.

The Murfreesboro Police Department urges anyone who witnessed the shooting to step forward and cooperate with detectives by contacting 629-201-5615.

Gann has been detained at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a bond set at $1,510,000.

A hearing has been scheduled for June 24, 2024, in the Rutherford County General Sessions Court.
