19-year-old Dontis Carter killed in targeted shooting at apartment complex in Wichita

Wichita, KS – At 9:39 PM on April 9, 2024, Sedgwick County 911 received multiple reports of shots fired at an apartment complex in the 2600 block of South Emporia, prompting a response from law enforcement.

Upon arrival, officers found 19-year-old Dontis Carter, a resident of Wichita, with multiple gunshot wounds.

Despite immediate medical attention from officers, Sedgwick County EMS, and Wichita Fire Department personnel, Mr. Carter succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Law enforcement officers and investigators swiftly initiated efforts to gather information and pursue leads. Through coordinated efforts between patrol officers and investigators, a 19-year-old Damarqua Keyleon Kendell Edwards resident of Wichita was identified as the suspect.

The suspect was apprehended after a traffic stop was conducted near his residence.

Preliminary information suggests that it was a targeted incident, as the suspect and the victim were acquainted and engaged in a dispute at the time of the shooting.

The 19-year-old suspect has been arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on charges of First-Degree Murder and Possession of Marijuana.

Additionally, he faces charges of Aggravated Robbery related to a separate incident that occurred on December 20, 2023, at a business in the 1900 block of E. Pawnee.

The details of these cases will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for formal charging consideration. This is the 13th Criminal Homicide of 2024.
