Lockdown at North Carolina Central University lifted, one person shot

University Police chief refrained from disclosing whether the victim was a student or if there were suspects being pursued.

A shooting occurred Tuesday night at North Carolina Central University, prompting the campus to enter lockdown.

University Police reported that the incident happened around 10:15 p.m. within Lawson Residence Hall.

The university initiated the lockdown at approximately 10:23 p.m. and ended it around 12:25 a.m. on Wednesday.

Authorities reported that one individual sustained a gunshot wound inside the residence hall and was transported to Duke Hospital by EMS.

The current condition of the individual remains unknown. As part of the investigation, the Durham Police Department closed Lawson Street from Lincoln Street to Fayetteville Street.

During a press briefing around 12:50 a.m., the University Police chief refrained from disclosing whether the victim was a student or if there were suspects being pursued.

It was emphasized that there is no immediate threat to the campus, and a criminal investigation is underway.
