23-year-old Jashawn Neal killed, 1-year-old girl critically injured in shooting at Colonial Terrace apartment complex

On Tuesday afternoon, a double shooting occurred, resulting in the death of a man and leaving a one-year-old girl in critical condition.

The victim has been identified as Jashawn Neal, 23, by the Baton Rouge Police Department.

The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. at the Colonial Terrace apartment complex off Wooddale Boulevard on Tuesday, March 26.

According to Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse, upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a deceased man outside and two children receiving assistance from neighbors nearby, one of whom had sustained a gunshot wound.

Morse confirmed that the one-year-old girl had been struck by gunfire and was in critical condition.

She was promptly transported to the hospital and underwent surgery, remaining in critical condition as of the latest update.

Morse expressed his condolences to the families affected by the shooting and acknowledged the broader impact of the recent surge in violent and fatal crimes on the community.

He became emotional while recounting his interaction with a grieving mother at the Wooddale scene.

Police stated that a potential suspect or motive is yet to be determined.
