NYPD officer 31-year-old Jonathan Diller shot and killed by suspect Guy Rivera

According to authorities, Rivera had been apprehended by the NYPD on four occasions prior to the shooting.

During a vehicle stop in Queens on Monday, an on-duty NYPD officer was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 5:48 p.m. at 1919 Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway, where two officers from the NYPD Critical Response Team were conducting the stop.

This team has been targeting vehicles with fake plates, illegal tints, or other quality-of-life concerns.

According to NYPD officials, the officers stopped the vehicle, occupied by two men, due to it being illegally parked at a bus stop.

According to police, a man suspected of killing NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller in Queens on Monday was in a vehicle unlawfully parked at a bus stop.

Gunfire erupted just prior to 6 p.m. in the vicinity of Mott Avenue and Smith Place.

Authorities stated that driver Lindy Jones, 41, and passenger Guy Rivera, 34, were inside the gray SUV, which was parked illegally.

As per authorities, Diller instructed Rivera to exit the vehicle when Rivera reportedly produced a firearm and shot the 31-year-old officer in the abdomen, just below his protective vest.

According to police, Diller’s colleague subsequently fired at Rivera’s back. Authorities reported that despite being wounded, Diller managed to seize Rivera’s firearm.

The officer tragically passed away from his injuries at Jamaica Hospital, as confirmed by authorities. Rivera remains hospitalized following surgery, along with Jones, according to police.

The shooting occurred merely two blocks from the 101st Precinct.

According to authorities, Rivera had been apprehended by the NYPD on four occasions prior to the shooting. Police stated that he had previously faced charges related to hate crimes and possession of illicit substances.

Jones, as per authorities, had been arrested 14 times. They indicated that he was recently charged with possessing a loaded firearm in April 2023.
