Chicago police officer shot, suspect 26-year-old suspect Dexter Reed killed in Garfield Park shooting

During a traffic stop on the West Side Thursday night, a shootout occurred, resulting in the death of 26-year-old suspect Dexter Reed and injuring a Chicago police officer, as per police reports.

Officers initiated the traffic stop around 6:02 p.m. in the 3800-block of West Ferdinand Street.

As officers were inside the vehicle, there was an exchange of gunfire, resulting in an officer being shot in the wrist and the suspect sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspect was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile, the injured officer is recovering at Stroger Hospital and is currently in good condition. Four other officers were also taken to the hospital for evaluation.

A neighbor partially captured the shootout between police officers and the suspect on camera.

A white SUV, marked with bullet holes, appears to have collided with a black vehicle.

At the scene, numerous evidence markers were placed as the investigation commenced.

“Bodycam footage captures the entire incident,” stated Superintendent Snelling. “Our investigative response team is currently conducting an inquiry. COPA is present, and we are fully cooperating with them.”

The officers implicated have served on the force for two to five years.

They have all been placed on administrative leave for 30 days while the investigation unfolds.
