An active-duty member of the US Air Force, identified as Aaron Bushnell, aged 25, from San Antonio, Texas, died after setting himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, on Sunday, according to authorities.

In a video of the incident obtained by Channel3 NOW, Bushnell stated that he would “no longer be complicit in genocide” and expressed solidarity with Palestinians enduring the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

He poured an unknown liquid over himself and ignited it while shouting “Free Palestine” repeatedly, before collapsing as police officers rushed to extinguish the flames with fire extinguishers.

He was then transported by DC Fire and Emergency Services to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, as stated by the Metropolitan Police Department.

Local authorities are collaborating with the US Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to investigate the incident, which occurred around 1 p.m. in northwest Washington.

Bushnell’s identity was confirmed by MPD, and Rose Riley, a spokesperson for the US Air Force, confirmed that he was an active-duty airman.

Further details will be provided once next-of-kin notifications are completed, as per the Air Force.
