Police report that a juvenile lost their life in a Tuesday afternoon shooting in Kingsport.

Responding to reports of a shooting at Holston Terrace apartments on Bowater Drive around 3 p.m., officers discovered the victim to be a 14-year-old male identified as Zaine Hite, a student at Dobyns-Bennett High School.

Sadly, Zaine succumbed to an apparent gunshot wound.

The police department is collaborating with Kingsport City Schools to provide counselors at Dobyns-Bennett starting Wednesday to offer support for students and staff.

Officials from the Kingsport Police Department (KPD) issued a statement updating the situation concerning the shooting that claimed the life of a Dobyns-Bennett High School student on Tuesday afternoon.

In a press conference on Wednesday, KPD Public Information Officer Brandon Johnson disclosed that the deceased student is 14-year-old Zaine Hite.

Johnson remarked, “A family had to spend last night knowing that one of the people that they loved the most in this world was no longer with them.”

Johnson continued by stating that a 14-year-old male is currently in custody in relation to the incident. He is charged with criminally negligent homicide and handgun possession by a juvenile.

The name of the suspect has not been disclosed. Johnson emphasized, “We are about 24 hours into this, there’s still a lot of questions that we have, our detectives have that we’re still trying to answer and track down, but obviously our priority is making sure that something like this does not happen again in our community.”

The KPD noted that the investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released at the appropriate time.
