Update: The deceased Perry Middle School student has been identified as eleven-year-old Ahmir Jolliff.   Ahmir’s cause of death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds, 3 in total, and his manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

During an afternoon news conference, law enforcement officials reported that a tragic shooting at Perry High School on Thursday morning resulted in the death of one sixth-grade student and injuries to five others.

Presently, one victim is in critical condition, while the remaining four are in stable condition.

Law enforcement identified 17-year-old Dylan Butler as the shooter, stating that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities discovered and deactivated an improvised explosive device within the school, and the shooter was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun.

Unfortunately, Iowa has a record of previous school shootings.

The shooting commenced at approximately 7:37 a.m., as indicated by authorities, roughly 20 minutes prior to the scheduled start of school at Perry High School.

High school students were relocated to Perry Lutheran Homes and the Iowa National Guard Armory. A districtwide communication message confirmed that all staff members have been granted permission to return home.

Authorities reported that the shooter, 17-year-old Dylan Butler, took his own life on the school grounds. Police discovered an improvised explosive device (IED) in the school, and the suspect was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun.

While law enforcement had not yet disclosed the identities of the victims, they confirmed the death of one sixth-grade student and injuries to five others.

Among the injured, four were students, and one, verified through other sources, was identified as school administrator Principal Dan Marburger.

Dan Marburger

Presently, one victim is in critical condition, while the remaining four are in stable condition.

Two educators mentioned that Dan Marburger, the high school principal, sustained gunshot injuries. Various vigils are scheduled throughout Thursday, January 4, both during the day and evening, to express support for the victims of the Perry High School shooting.

Zander Shelley

Another victim Zander Shelley, aged 15, found himself in a hallway, anticipating the start of the school day, when he heard gunshots.

Quickly responding, he sought refuge in a nearby classroom, as recounted by his father, Kevin Shelley. Zander sustained two grazing injuries and concealed himself within the classroom.

According to his father Zander is feeling fine. They did x Ray’s and ct scans and there are no bullets or fragments inside of him so they believe he was only grazed twice. We just got home.

LifeServe Blood Center, the primary blood provider for hospitals in Dallas and Polk counties attending to the victims, announced on social media that it dispatched extra blood products to these medical facilities.

They also urged individuals capable of doing so to schedule a blood donation appointment through http://lifeserve.info/schedule or by calling 800-287-4903.
