Update: The Greenville Police Department is disclosing additional information about a shooting incident resulting in the tragic death of a middle school student.

According to authorities, the victim, Zykere Langley, was shot by another teenager in the vicinity of 1700 South Greene Street on the night of December 30, 2023.

The unfortunate incident originated from a social media dispute between two 14-year-olds. On New Year’s Eve, the alleged 14-year-old perpetrator voluntarily surrendered to the police, and charges related to the murder were subsequently filed against him.

A dispute originating on social media between two 14-year-olds escalated to the tragic killing of middle schooler Zykere Langley. Melissa Cannon, a Family Intervention Specialist at Youth Villages, expresses concern, stating, “Witnessing young kids engaging in arguments and fights over trivial matters, resulting in loss of life, is truly heartbreaking.”

The 14-year-old accused is currently in custody, facing three charges related to the murder, with the possibility of additional charges as the investigation progresses.

Authorities in Greenville are conducting an investigation following the shooting death of a teenager over the past weekend.

The incident unfolded around 9:50 p.m. on December 30th, when officers responded to the area of 1700 South Greene Street due to a Shot Spotter activation.

As officers were en route to the scene, the city’s public safety camera system observed Zykere Langley, 14, collapsing in the street near the intersection of Pitt Street and Brown Street.

Upon reaching the location, officers discovered him with a gunshot wound and initiated life-saving measures.

Langley was subsequently transported to ECU Health, where he passed away the following day.

Investigators are of the opinion that this shooting was a deliberate and targeted act, and they have made significant progress in identifying potential suspects.

On December 31st, at approximately 1 p.m., a 14-year-old was apprehended in connection with the murder and subsequently transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.

Zykere Langley, the victim, was a student at CM Eppes Middle School.
