26-year-old Exavier Mitchell killed in shooting at Birmingham Dollar General parking lot

The individual who lost his life in a barrage of gunfire in west Birmingham has been officially identified. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office disclosed that the victim was Exavier Tywan Mitchell, a 26-year-old resident of Birmingham.

Emergency services, including Birmingham police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, promptly responded to the Dollar General in the 2300 block of Warrior Road, near Five Points West, just after 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, registered at least 16 rounds discharged.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Mitchell in an unresponsive state at the far end of the parking lot, located outside his black SUV.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service officially declared him deceased at the scene at 2:44 p.m. As per police radio communications, a dark vehicle swiftly departed from the scene.

He emphasized the seriousness of the incident occurring in broad daylight, saying, “This incident happened in broad daylight.” Numerous grieving family members, including the victim’s mother, hurried to the scene.

Fitzgerald expressed the difficulty of hearing the anguish, saying, “You cannot begin to describe the screams we have heard on this call.

That’s something you never get used to.” He added that everyone is heartbroken and lamented the frequency of such heartbreaking cries in 2023.
