In what seems to be an accidental shooting in a west Birmingham alley, a young boy has tragically lost his life.

Officers from the West Precinct responded to a call at 4:50 p.m. on Sunday reporting a juvenile shot in the 1300 block of Pike Road.

Upon arrival, they were directed to an alley where a 12-year-old boy was discovered with a gunshot wound.

The boy was quickly transported to Children’s of Alabama, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

“Based on the information gathered by our officers,” stated Officer Truman Fitzgerald, “we believe the juvenile unintentionally shot himself while handling a firearm.

We have found no indication that another person shot him,” Fitzgerald clarified. The police suspect that the boy may have obtained the gun from a nearby vehicle, and there were adults present at the scene.

Fitzgerald added, “Everybody that was there is cooperating with us. We’re treating this investigation with the same diligence as any case involving the tragic death of a juvenile.”

Sadly, this incident marks the second child killed in an apparent accidental shooting in Birmingham this week.
