Pennsylvania news anchor Emily Matson died by suicide

Emily Matson, a cherished news anchor in Pennsylvania, was tragically struck and fatally injured by a train.

Her death, occurring in Fairview Township where she resided, has been officially ruled as a suicide by the Erie County Coroner’s Office. Emily Matson was an anchor for “Erie News Now.”

The incident took place early Monday morning.

Emily had been an integral part of the news team for two decades, making her last on-air appearance on Friday night.

The station shared the heartbreaking news of her demise, with Scott MacDowell, the show’s news director, expressing, “Emily was a shining light in our newsroom, delivering news with a passion and love she had for the Erie community and Northwest Pennsylvania.”

He further conveyed, “We loved Emily dearly, and our hearts go out to the Matson family and her husband Ryan at this time.” Colleagues, including meteorologist Sara Tonks, joined in expressing grief over the tragic loss. Tonks shared, “I can’t count the number of times that I would stop by her desk to talk to her or just listen to her talk to others.”
