Suspects in custody after shots fired at Oak Park Mall, no injuries reported

Update: This afternoon, no injuries were reported, and suspects are now in custody following shots fired at Oak Park Mall. An Overland Park Police officer tried to approach two individuals suspected of shoplifting near the mall’s food court.

One of the suspects reached for the officer’s gun and fired a shot. Thankfully, it did not hit anyone and no one was hurt. Police took one suspect in custody in the mall and the other suspect shortly after that.

The mall continues to be locked down and we are working on clearing the scene to release shoppers.

The Overland Park Police Department is conducting an investigation into a shooting incident at Oak Park Mall late Sunday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the department confirmed the occurrence of the shooting to Channel3 and stated that a law enforcement officer is suspected to have been involved.

However, a Public Information Officer (PIO) from the department could not confirm details such as injuries or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

At least one person detained at the scene.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting and the individuals involved are currently unclear. This incident marks the second mall shooting in the Kansas City area this week.

Police ask public to please stay out of the area.
