A 16-year-old has tragically lost her life after attending a Halloween party early Sunday morning. According to family members speaking to the Channel3, Kalin Janae Washington was one of ten victims, aged 16 to 22, in a shooting incident.
They assert that she was an innocent bystander, simply wanting to relish being a teenager at a Halloween gathering. Washington had a passion for dancing and styling her hair. Her family fondly remembered her for her vibrant spirit; she was known for her playful nature and infectious laughter.
They emphasized her kindness, respectfulness, and underscored that she did not deserve this tragedy.
The IMPD reports that the other individuals wounded in the shooting included three 16-year-old boys, two 17-year-old boys, two 18-year-old women, and a 21-year-old man and woman.
According to IMPD officials, they were dispatched to the 5100 block of East 65th Street, near Binford Boulevard, in response to reports of a shooting incident around midnight on Sunday morning.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered at least nine individuals with gunshot wounds in an undisclosed location. The young girl who lost her life was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Officer Samone Burris of IMPD stated, “Upon arrival, officers heard gunshots and observed a large crowd dispersing from the area.” It’s crucial for them to have a safe space for enjoyment. Moreover, our youth require support from parents, community members, churches, and any organizations dedicated to their well-being. Our young ones depend on us.
Burris emphasized that this incident underscores the importance of engaging in conversations with young people, educating them about gun violence, conflict resolution, and how to have a good time while ensuring a safe return home.
Thankfully, the other shooting victims are not in critical condition. IMPD reported the discovery of multiple firearms at the scene. Several individuals have been detained, though no arrests have been made yet.
IMPD is actively investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting. The event saw a significant gathering of teenagers and young adults who were attending a Halloween-themed party before the gunfire erupted.
