Early Sunday morning, an argument at MLK Park turned violent. Around 2:45 am, gunshots rang out near the park, prompting calls to 911. Responding officers found a chaotic scene with multiple victims.

One victim, a 33-year-old man, suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his lower body. Police applied a tourniquet and transported him to the hospital.

In total, six people were shot, and an officer was also injured during the incident.

Authorities revealed that five additional victims arrived at hospitals with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

These victims, ranging from 17 to 25 years old, likely sought treatment after initially leaving the scene.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an argument that erupted during a late-night gathering at the park. According to reports, an individual within the group brandished a firearm and opened fire on the crowd.

As police attempted to clear the park after the shooting, a new struggle emerged. 38-year-old Joshua Sanchez reportedly hindered officers and initiated a physical altercation.

During his arrest, one officer sustained injuries and received treatment at a local hospital.

“Obviously, when people actively fight officers providing medical aid, it significantly complicates the situation,” said RPD Chief David Smith.

Sanchez faces charges of second-degree assault, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and harassment.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with the RPD’s non-fatal shooting unit leading the probe.

Authorities are yet to identify the shooter or determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. The area will see an increased police presence in the wake of the violence.
