In a terrible incident on Saturday night, a 19-year-old Tampa man, Christos Alexander Themelis Jr., was killed during a shootout with deputies.

The tragedy unfolded after Themelis Jr. allegedly shot and killed his parents, Christos Byron Themelis, 51, and Rebecca Ann Themelis, 48, and wounded a deputy responding to the scene.

Deputy Shane McGough, 26, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and is currently in stable condition after undergoing surgery on Sunday, the sheriff reported.

Deputies were dispatched to a residence on Cactus Wren Place in Tampa at 11:09 p.m. EDT following a call from a woman who reported her husband had been shot.

While the caller was on the line, the dispatcher heard multiple gunshots, according to the television station.

Upon arrival, officers found the 19-year-old suspect and his mother outside the house, according to the sheriff’s department.

A tense standoff ensued, and tragically, the suspect shot his mother before firing at the officers, injuring Deputy McGough.

The sheriff’s department reported that five deputies returned fire, forcing the suspect to take cover inside his residence. One of the responding officer’s shots made contact with the suspect, who then barricaded himself within the home.

Sheriff Chronister reported that the sheriff’s office deployed its SWAT team after a critical incident. Using a robot, deputies entered the residence through the front door. Tragically, they found the father inside the home deceased from his injuries.

The SWAT team then secured the residence and located the suspect deceased in another room due to apparent self-inflicted injuries.

Sheriff Chronister expressed his condolences to the family, stating that the suspect was responsible for injuring a deputy and the deaths of his own parents.

He commended the deputies’ bravery in a chaotic situation, highlighting their swift actions that likely prevented further harm to the community.
