University of Southern Mississippi football player Marcus Daniels Jr in Hattiesburg shooting

Daniels was a standout football player from George County High School who previously played at Ole Miss before transferring to the University of Southern Mississippi.

Hattiesburg Police are investigating the death of Marcus Daniels Jr., 21, of George County, who was found unresponsive in his vehicle last night, Tuesday, June 11, in the 6300 Block of Highway 49.

The Hattiesburg Police Crime Scene Unit confirmed Daniels had been shot and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Statement from Hattiesburg Police Chief Hardy Sims:

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the Daniels family. We are doing all that we can to locate the perpetrators to bring justice to the victim and his family.”

“We are asking the community for their help and to come forward with any information pertaining to this tragic incident and the untimely death of Marcus Daniels.”

“We will share as much information as possible without jeopardizing the investigation. We are working closely with the university and local officials.”
