An explosion rocked downtown Youngstown yesterday afternoon, injuring people and causing significant damage.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene on East Federal Street, pulling victims from the heavily damaged Realty Building, which houses apartments above a Chase Bank branch. Ambulances transported the injured to hospitals.

Authorities evacuated the upper floors and secured the perimeter, blocking off the area to prevent further danger. The cause is suspected to be a gas explosion, with witnesses reporting a loud boom, smoke, and a gas smell.

Youngstown State University advised people to avoid the area due to the ongoing situation.

Both Chase Bank and the police are working to assess the situation, with the bank prioritizing everyone’s safety and then the damage evaluation.
