Following an alleged shooting at a Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy during a morning traffic stop, a man has taken refuge inside a hotel in north Des Moines.

The Budget Inn, located at 5220 NE 14th Street, is currently surrounded by a substantial police presence, as reported by Capt. Ryan Evans, spokesperson for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Evans, at approximately 10:15 a.m., a deputy initiated a traffic stop in the 5200 block of NE 14th Street.

Subsequently, one of the occupants alighted from the vehicle, discharged several rounds at our deputy, and then proceeded to fortify himself within the confines of the Budget Inn,” Evans stated. Fortunately, the deputy sustained no injuries.”

Authorities advise individuals to steer clear of the vicinity.

This is an area with a high population density, and when you have someone who acts as boldly as the suspect did — discharging rounds at a clearly identifiable police officer — it constitutes a grave situation,” remarked Evans.

This is a developing story that will be updated when more information is available.
