A Cleveland police officer has died after being shot early Thursday morning.

Cleveland Police Chief Annie Todd confirmed the news during a press conference shortly before 7 a.m.

The officer, identified as a 27-year-old man, had been with the department for the past four years and was assigned to the Third District.

“This is a really tough situation, and it’s hitting everyone really hard,” Chief Todd said during the press conference.

She did not release the officer’s name.

“Out of respect for his family, I’m not going to give that right now,” Chief Todd said. “I want to make sure that they’ve all received the proper notifications from their family members before we put that public.”

Chief Todd stated that officers had responded to a call on the 1500 block of East 80th regarding a man wanted for a felonious assault from a nearby suburb.

“Officers arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with the suspect,” Chief Todd said. “The man exited the house and tried to leave the area on a bicycle. When officers attempted to arrest him, he produced a firearm and began firing multiple times. One of our officers was struck and later died at the hospital from his injuries.”

The suspect, a 24-year-old man, was taken into custody and brought to the hospital as a precaution, though he had no injuries.

“His name will be released once he’s officially charged,” Chief Todd said.
