The shooting tragically claimed the life of a 15-year-old girl and injured her 5-year-old brother. Montgomery is currently being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

Birmingham police have identified a 15-year-old girl shot and killed on Wednesday afternoon as Cornelia Rose Lathan.

Her 5-year-old brother was also injured by gunfire, sustaining a leg wound.

The shooting happened on the 500 block of 25th Street North. According to police, shots were fired into an apartment, killing Lathan at the scene.

The 5-year-old was taken to Children’s of Alabama with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Birmingham Police (BPD) arrived at the scene and quickly determined the shooting was domestic violence.

The suspect, believed to be the mother’s boyfriend or ex-boyfriend, was apprehended outside the apartment where he fired into the residence.

The pregnant mother was taken to the hospital for evaluation as a precaution. BPD reveals they responded to this apartment earlier on Wednesday for a verbal altercation and have had previous calls to the location.
