Gila River police officer Joshua Briese killed in Santan area shooting

Tragedy struck the Gila River Indian Community early Saturday morning. A shooting erupted during a response to a reported disturbance at a Santan-area home around 2:00 am.

According to Gila River police, gunfire erupted amidst a large crowd, leaving one officer dead, another injured, and four other individuals hurt.

The shooting left a devastating mark. Six individuals, including two Gila River police officers, were rushed to local hospitals with varying injuries.

Officer Joshua Briese, a young officer still undergoing field training and with less than a year on the force, tragically succumbed to his wounds.

The incident wasn’t contained to Officer Briese’s loss. A second officer is fighting for recovery in serious but stable condition.

At least one other civilian victim also died. Details on the remaining injured are unavailable at this time.

The investigation by Gila River police and the FBI is ongoing to determine the identity and whereabouts of the shooter(s).
