16-Year-Old Kevian Andre Rice Fatally Shot During Online Marketplace Transaction in Kalamazoo

On Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, at about 2:05 p.m., Kevian Andre Rice, a 16-year-old resident of Kalamazoo, was killed by gunfire in the 1000 Block of Reed Street.

Officers responded to the report that a “man was just shot” with a vehicle leaving the scene at a high rate of speed.

On arrival, Officers located Mr. Rice suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and rendered emergency medical aid. Officers also located a firearm at the scene.

Mr. Rice was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

The vehicle that left the scene was located at an area hospital with two subjects seeking medical treatment for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

No further details will be released at this time as the investigation is active/open.

No arrests have been made.

This incident appears to involve an online marketplace transaction. KDPS encourages the use of public spaces to facilitate safe transactions between legitimate buyers and sellers. KDPS offers a “Safe Exchange Zone” at Headquarters, 150 E. Crosstown Parkway, that is recorded by video and audio to facilitate safe transactions.
