According to North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU), the suspect is a 17-year-old student. Reul made this announcement on Thursday during a session of the Interior Committee of the Düsseldorf state parliament.

Currently, it is believed that the perpetrator acted alone, but his motive remains unknown.

The alleged perpetrator sustained serious injuries. Reul stated that he was informed, with some caution, that the 17-year-old had inflicted the injuries on himself.

The operations management is currently categorizing the incident as a rampage.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at Wilhelm-Dörpfeld-Gymnasium in the Elberfeld district.

A designated contact point for parents has been established at Südstrasse 29. Authorities have confirmed that the school was evacuated.

“The students are safe and under supervision,” the statement assured. According to a reporter from dpa, police guided students out of the school building in groups during the extensive operation.

The evacuation proceeded in an organized manner, although many students appeared visibly shaken by the unfolding events. They were subsequently picked up by their parents.
