21-year-old Nicholas Tubbs shot and killed outside Chestnut Commons Walmart

Elyria police arrested 19-year-old Roosevelt Benton for felonious assault and say additional criminal charges are expected.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday, a man was shot in the parking lot of a local Walmart. Elyria police responded to a 911 call reporting the incident at the Walmart situated at 1000 Chestnut Commons.

Authorities have categorized the shooting as an “isolated incident.”

Upon reaching the location, officers discovered 21-year-old Nicholas Tubbs of Grafton in the parking area.

He was transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center and sadly passed away early Friday morning.

Following an initial inquiry, Elyria police issued a warrant for Roosevelt Benton, charging him with felonious assault.

Benton was apprehended in Oberlin and appeared in Elyria Municipal Court for arraignment on Friday. Elyria police anticipate filing further criminal charges against Benton as the investigation progresses.
