Shooting near West Lovell Street in Kalamazoo left two people dead

Update: On Thursday, September 28, 2023, around 10:53 a.m., officers responded to a shooting on the 900 block of W. Lovell Street. Upon arrival, officers located two males that were shot and immediately began life saving measures. On arrival, Officers located Tyrone Jerome Potts, a 35-year-old male from Kalamazoo, critically wounded by gunfire and another victim who had sustained several gunshot wounds.

Mr. Potts was transported to an area hospital. Unfortunately, Mr. Potts was pronounced dead a short time later. This is an active and ongoing investigation, however this does not appear to be a random shooting.

Investigators do have a vehicle of interest. KDPS is looking for a White Dodge Journey that was seen leaving the scene of the shooting with Michigan license plate 7PJS08.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) was called to a shooting incident on Thursday in the 900 block of West Lovell Street, situated approximately one block west of Stadium Drive and to the northeast of Western Michigan University.

KDPS reports indicate that two individuals sustained gunshot wounds, prompting an ongoing investigation. The full extent of their injuries has yet to be determined.

Kalamazoo College briefly implemented a lockdown, but has since resumed regular operations, according to the department. Individuals with information are urged to contact the KDPS Criminal Investigation Division at (269) 337-8139 to speak with a Detective.
