26-year-old Gevontae Daeron Morrison shot and killed outside Burke Village Apartments in Winston-Salem

A fatal shooting occurred overnight in Winston-Salem following an argument. The victim has been recently identified by the police.

At approximately 1 a.m. today, officers were dispatched to the Burke Village Apartments, located near Highway 52 and Liberty Street, in response to reports of a shooting.

Upon reaching the scene, officers discovered Gevontae Daeron Morrison, a 26-year-old resident of Winston-Salem, who had sustained a gunshot injury.

The officers provided assistance until EMS arrived, but unfortunately, Morrison succumbed to his injuries. Investigation revealed that Morrison had engaged in a verbal dispute with unidentified individuals outside the apartment complex.

Following the altercation, while Morrison was returning to his vehicle, the suspect(s) fired multiple shots at him before departing the vicinity.

Detectives suspect that the perpetrator(s) and the victim had a prior acquaintance. Although there were several witnesses present during the incident, none of them were willing to assist the officers at the scene.

This incident marks the 36th homicide of 2023, in contrast to 26 homicides during the corresponding period in 2022.
