Significant damage has been reported after a tornado struck the town of Tongaat, South Africa, according to local media.

There are reports of casualties, and search and rescue operations are currently underway.

Severe weather struck Tongaat, South Africa, this afternoon. Hail pelted the area around 4pm, followed by reports and videos circulating on social media of a possible tornado forming inland and causing widespread destruction.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued a level 1 weather warning earlier in the day, but the intensity of the storm appears to have surprised many residents.

There is no official confirmation of a tornado yet, and SAWS was unreachable at the time of writing.
