Channel3 NOW has obtained information from multiple independent sources identifying 35-year-old Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed as the suspect in Thursday’s mass shooting and police ambush in south Minneapolis, which resulted in the death of Officer Jamal Mitchell.

Records reveal that Mohamed had a history of violent crime and was wanted on several warrants at the time of the incident.

According to a source, it has been learned that between last night and today, MPD Chief Brian O’Hara held a meeting with several officers in the 5th Precinct conference room where he “blamed local politicians” for the death of Officer Jamal Mitchell.

We’ve learned that Officer Mitchell was working a mandatory overtime shift in a single-officer squad due to short staffing. According to the MPD, Mitchell was “rendering aid to an injured male when the injured male assassinated him and continued to shoot him after he fell to the ground.”

Just after 5:00 p.m., officers responded to a shots fired call at an apartment on 22nd Street near Blaisdell Avenue in Minneapolis. When officers arrived, the suspect fired at officers, and a gunfight ensued.

Officer Mitchell was wounded and transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. Two shooting victims were found at the scene. One was pronounced dead, and the other was in critical condition. Another officer and firefighter were wounded with non-life-threatening injuries. An innocent bystander was also shot.

The suspect was shot and killed.

Officer Mitchell had served with the Minneapolis Police Department for two years. He is survived by his son and fiancée.

On Officer Mitchell’s third day working for the Minneapolis Police Department, he rescued an elderly couple from a burning home.

This is a developing story that will be updated when more information is available.
