Update: The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has expressed profound sorrow in announcing the passing of Deputy Investigator John H. Coddou, aged 50.

He was assisting at a crash scene this morning when he was struck by a vehicle.

Deputy Coddou had dedicated 20 years to the agency, serving as a Crimes Against Persons Investigator in the Violent Crimes Unit.

He initially joined the agency as a detention officer in 2003 and transitioned to a deputy role in 2005. He served as a patrol deputy in District 4 in West Harris County.

A deputy sustained serious injuries on Tuesday morning in northwest Harris County after being hit by a vehicle, as confirmed by Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The Harris County deputy was aiding at a crash site on SH-99 at Cumberland Ridge when a passing vehicle struck him.

Life Flight was summoned to transport the deputy to Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

There were no additional reported injuries. It remains unclear whether any charges will be brought forth.

Both lanes on SH-99 at Cumberland Ridge have been closed as authorities investigate the incident.
