On Sunday, tragedy struck Eldora as a 13-year-old girl lost her life in a shooting incident.

Law enforcement received a call reporting the shooting at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the 800 block of 12th Street.

Upon arrival, authorities arrested a 12-year-old boy in connection with the incident.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has joined the investigation.

The victim, a student at South Hardin Middle School, was identified as the teenager who tragically passed away.

The school has issued a statement regarding the incident on Facebook.

Adam Zellmer, superintendent of South Hardin Schools, verified to KCCI that the teenage girl attended South Hardin Middle School.

“I miss seeing her smile as she walked down the hallway,” Zellmer expressed. “She was known for her artistic talents, her joyful nature, her kindness, and her dedication.”

Zellmer emphasized that the loss of the student has deeply impacted the entire community. “It’s as if there’s an empty seat at the dinner table,” he remarked. “That feeling has lingered for the past few days.”

Central Rivers AEA deployed over a dozen staff members to aid students and staff in managing the aftermath of the tragedy on Monday and Tuesday.

The superintendent expressed a commitment to ongoing community support.

“We will unite. We will show love for each other,” Zellmer stated. “We will stand by one another, and together, we will overcome this.”

Zellmer revealed that the 12-year-old boy apprehended was also a student at the school.
