Around 10 p.m. on Thursday night, reports of a man being shot at 527 South Main prompted an alert to E-911. Carthage Police, Carthage Fire, and Mercy AMB responded to the emergency.

Carthage Police Lieutenant Eric Miller informed Channel3 NOW, stating, “Upon arrival, officers performed CPR, and the 18-year-old Sean Schubert was pronounced dead at the scene from a single gunshot wound.”

Following the investigation, he stated that a 20-year-old male accidentally discharged the fatal shot.

The incident took place inside an apartment located in the building formerly housing the Carthage Press, two blocks south of the Carthage Square, which now accommodates multiple units.

Late Thursday night, crime scene tape was observed by our cameras, indicating that the area was secured for investigation.

Additionally, Jasper County Deputy Coroner James Harrison arrived to conduct an inquiry and retrieve the body.

“The case is being forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office for review,” Lieutenant Miller informed us. Currently, no arrests have been made.
