A tragic incident unfolded on the near northeast side of Indianapolis, where a teenage student lost their life after being shot in the parking lot of a high school.

Family and friends are mourning the loss of 15-year-old Devin, the Kipp Indy Legacy High School student who tragically lost his life today in the school parking lot, witnessed by his mother.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received the call around 12:55 p.m. Friday, directing them to 2259 Ralston Avenue for a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim, later identified as a male student from KIPP Indy Legacy High School, suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot.

The victim, initially reported to be in critical condition, tragically succumbed to their injuries, as confirmed in an update around 4 p.m. Friday by IMPD Lt. Shane Foley.

The victim’s guardian has been notified, and fortunately, no other individuals were harmed. Lt. Foley stated that a teenage male has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting.

While initially identified as another KIPP student, the department has since clarified that this is not the case.

IMPD provided a clarification at around 3:15 p.m. via social media, emphasizing that the person detained is not a student, contrary to previous statements.

According to Lt. Foley, the teenager is considered a suspect in the shooting and was apprehended in a location separate from the crime scene.

The incident took place in the parking lot adjacent to Edna Martin Christian Center and the high school. Marion County Crime Lab personnel arrived at the scene and collected a jacket, several bullet casings, and additional evidence, Foley reported. IMPD reiterated around 4 p.m. that it is believed to have been a targeted incident.

During the 4 p.m. news conference, Lt. Foley confirmed that an earlier reported “disturbance” had occurred at KIPP Indy Legacy HS.

However, no additional details were provided, and detectives are currently investigating any potential connection to the shooting.

The Kipp Indy Legacy High School will be reaching out to families through Titan regarding dismissal for further updates,” IMPD announced around 2:30 p.m. on social media. “Families of students at the Edna Martin Christian Center should have already received communication from the center. All after-school activities have been canceled.”

This is a developing story that will be updated when more information is available.
