Lockdown at UNC Chapel Hill has been lifted

After a tense hour for students and staff at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC police have issued an “all clear” message to the campus community.

The university had issued an emergency notification about a potentially armed or dangerous individual on or near campus at around 1 p.m.

The confirmation of safety was announced at approximately 2:10 p.m.

According to a Channel3 News source, the boyfriend of a staff member at Alpine Bagel Cafe entered the establishment, brandished a firearm, and then departed.

It is currently believed that this individual has left the campus area. Channel3 News has been informed that no gunfire occurred. Police officers were stationed around the UNC Student Union building.

UNC-Chapel Hill has issued an urgent alert regarding the presence of an armed or potentially dangerous individual on or near campus Wednesday afternoon.

University police are urging all students, faculty, and staff to:

Law enforcement has been alerted to be vigilant for a suspect connected to an incident at Alpine Bagel in the UNC Student Union.

An individual was observed in proximity to that area with a firearm, prompting people to exit the student union.
