At 12:54 p.m., the university issued a notification advising students and staff to promptly remain indoors and secure windows and doors until further instructions.

By 2:11 p.m., UNC confirmed that it was safe to return to regular activities, signaling the end of the lockdown. The investigation seemed to focus on Alpine Bagel in the Student Union. Law enforcement indicated that they believe this to be an isolated incident.

According to witnesses who spoke to Channel3 NOW, an altercation ensued between a man and the cashier. It was noted by these witnesses that the cashier did not seem to be a student.

They further reported that during this heated exchange, the man produced a firearm and directed it towards the cashier’s head.

Fortunately, no shots were fired, but several individuals promptly dialed 911. As a result of the incident, Alpine Bagel opted to close early for the day.

The University canceled all residential classes for Wednesday and all offices and facilities were closed. UNC is expected to resume normal operations on Thursday.
