Female Roanoke Police Officer injured after shooting at Melrose Towers, suspect killed

A fatality and a severe injury to an officer occurred during a shooting at Melrose Towers on Sunday.

Roanoke Police were conducting an investigation into a homicide that took place around 11:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Lawrence Ave SE.

At approximately 4 p.m., the individual of interest in the investigation was located walking near Melrose Towers, prompting three officers to approach the suspect.

Subsequently, the suspect shot an officer, leading to the police shooting and killing the suspect. The injured officer was transported to a city hospital for medical attention.

The identities of the suspect and the officer involved have not been disclosed.

The Virginia State Police are handling the investigation into the incident.
