Wednesday morning saw the tragic shooting death of a man inside a residence in east Birmingham.

Police were called to the scene just before 8:30 a.m. at a house located in the 7800 block of Seventh Court South after receiving reports of a person shot.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that upon arrival, they discovered the victim of the shooting unresponsive within the residence.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services confirmed the man’s death at the scene.

At least two young children were present in the home at the time of the fatal incident.

Investigators suspect that a domestic dispute occurred between two individuals at the residence.

Following this altercation, the victim returned home and engaged in another argument with a man described by police as the suspect.

It was during this subsequent argument that the victim was shot.

Subsequently, the victim fled the scene.

Although the suspect remains at large, police have identified him. It is noted that all parties involved were acquainted with each other.

“Our detectives will be speaking with these witnesses, and we aim to gather further information regarding this investigation,” Fitzgerald stated. Police provided a car seat to transport one of the children to police headquarters while the parents are interviewed as witnesses. “It’s a tragic reality that these children were present during the loss of someone’s life,” Fitzgerald remarked. The victim marks Birmingham’s 18th homicide this year, with one ruled justifiable and therefore not considered criminal. Across all of Jefferson County, there have been 23 homicides, including the 18 in Birmingham. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact Birmingham homicide investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
