15-year-old Markell Sanders shot and killed inside home in Birmingham

In the early hours of Sunday, a teenager was fatally shot inside a residence in east Birmingham.

The victim, identified as 15-year-old Markell Sanders, was reported to 911 by his mothers at 12:16 a.m.

Upon police arrival at the residence on 39th Avenue North in the 4200 block, they discovered the unresponsive teen. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at the scene.

Sgt. Wade mentioned that information is currently restricted. Detectives are actively interviewing family members to establish the sequence of events.

As of now, no arrests have been executed.

The unfortunate incident marks Sanders as the fifth homicide victim in Birmingham this year.

Across all of Jefferson County, there have been seven homicides, with five of them occurring in Birmingham.
